The Race to Wainui Tour is back! Sorry for the late post but the Mole has been on nappy-changing duties and dancing the hokey-pokey for the last month but Iuckily I've had my spies out and about... The first event is in the books with a solid 18 showing up for the first round in perfect conditions at Ohariu Valley. Jamie Molenaar started strongly with his second career victory, Turtle finished second on his tour debut, with Josh Mooney, Morp, and another debutant, Brett Burrows rounding out the top five to bank the day winnings. With some form on the board the TAB has listed the odds for the upcoming season... here's just a few options I stumbled accross...
Tour Champion
$3.50 - John Flavin - finished 3rd overall last season, and with a few more lessons under his belt from Miramars resident golfing lesbian will start the year favourite to go a couple better this year
$7.00 - Andy Parsons - Would probably start favourite but with vending machines beckoning might not play enough to bank enough cash
$9.00 - Brett Burrows - An early smokey for the title. With little known about him he could be this years Marty Jillings. Has already come in from $50.00 to $9.00 after his strong early showing
Most Likely to finish a round with at least one broken club
$1.08 - Josh Mooney - an almost unbackable favourite, prone to a mid-course breakdown at any time with his own clubs likely to bear the brunt.
$7.00 - Mike Crawford - always living slightly on the edge and not shy with the old f-bomb... maybe one day he will crack
$15.00 - John Deveraux - seems to have adopted his John Daly moniker well with a few torn up scorecards. Discarding a club into a water hazard seems the obvious next step
Who will walk the most kilometres during the season
$1.50 - Mark Donnelly/Sam Fairley - Two of the finest sideways golfers you'll ever see. From one side of the rough to the other, the TAB couldn't split these two short-priced favourites.
To Win a Major
$3.80 - Mark Storer - with the majors being played as a Nett format it should favour the lower handicappers with Stores looking to lose last years 'most golf' title he will be motivated to pick up the Green Jacket or the Claret Mug
$4.50 - Hayden Martin - Another consistant performer who faded down the stretch last season. Looks poised to make a run in the big events
Remember all the other events are co-sanctioned and you pick up an extra $1.00 for playing so make sure you support these ones. Good to see a large turnout go up to Palmerston so long may it continue. Thats all folks - see you in Martinborough for the Kevin Hintz Sheep-Shagging Homecoming Special...
